I made aliyah over 6 months ago, during this period I have signed up with the Jewish Agency’s Aliyah Job Center on numerous occasions but have still not received any login information. This is not an isolated incident as I have spoken to a few friends who have had the same experience!
I called the Jewish Agency and was given a telephone number that goes to a voicemail. I have sent an email to several addresses at the Jewish Agency and am yet to receive a response.
Has anyone else had this experience with the Jewish Agency – סוכנות? Have you found a job through the Aliyah Job Center? If so, let us know in the comments below.
For furniture and other home furnishings, I recommend Sit and Sleep at 53 Herzl Street, Nahariya.
I bought 2 new mattresses there this past year and have been happy with the service and the price. Erez, the owner, speaks English and is very helpful. A couple who recently made aliyah and moved to Nahariya (and were just learning Hebrew) who bought several pieces of furniture for their new home at Sit & Sleep actually recommended the store to me.

Richard Mann is an attorney and advocate in Nahariyah. We know him from legal work he has done for us while making aliyah to Nahariyah. He helped us on the purchase of our apartment, and gave us much needed direction on the details of everyday living such as setting up a bank account, establishing accounts for utilities, and more. As we were going back and forth between Nahariyah and the U.S., much of our contacts with Richard were by telephone and e-mail, and included sending large sums of money from our bank to Israel. From that time and in the subsequent two years that we have gotten to know Richard, we have always been impressed with his helpful and direct approach to assessing and solving the issues we bring to him. He is both an American-Israeli and an Israeli-American in that he can give Anglo olim competent professional services and insight into how things are done in Israel.

KOLBO Pet Supply Shop
The owner, Meir, and the employees speak English. They keep records in the computer in case you forget which brand your pet likes. They deliver. They are great people and it is a great shop.

VETERINARIAN, I have been very happy with Dr. Milgram at 19 Hertzl. His email is dr_milgram@bezeqint.net and telephone number is 04-952-1666.
I have moved this review here, from the Go-Coast blog, because Jason is doing a better job than we were at Go-Coast of providing a forum of this type. Thanks, Jason!
KIM is the name of both the charming women’s clothing shop (located on the City Hall plaza in Nahariya), and its equally charming Australian proprietress. This is one of only a few shops in Nahariya with a nice selection of more modest clothing.
I originally wrote this review for posting on the Go-Coast blog. I have moved it here because Jason has created a better forum for this purpose. I encourage others to post here. Jason, Kuddos and thanks for doing it.
Habustan (הבוסטן) for Spices, dried fruits, nuts, raisins, rice, organic products and much more.
Located at 56 Herzl Street in Nahariya you can buy all these items in bulk (exactly in the amount you want and at good prices).
The staff are helpful.

Even for the oleh kadash, there are commercial transactions in Nahariya that turn out to be fun. Consider, if you will the purchase of iced coffee from Aroma on Weitzman and the Ga’aton. The young ladies at the register who take your order, all speak English, and they are drop-dead gorgeous. Their smiles have a sudden positive aerobic effect. Now, I am an older person, and when I return to reality I am not specifically thinking about them. It is more like whether they have a grandmother who is a widow or is divorced and would like to go out for a drink or a cup of coffee. Yes, I would like to recommend Aroma if not for the customer service then for the outdoor café atmosphere. And the iced coffee is a treat.

When I first came to Nahariya, not having any furniture at all, I needed to buy a bed and an armoire. I checked out a few stores and got an idea as to quality and pricing. I happened to come upon a furniture store, Rahiti Yasmin, located on 12 Lochamee HaGeta’ot, the street just past the bus station. No one there speaks English. Hebrew, Arabic and Russian will do, but no English. However, they bent over backwards in order to communicate. And they succeeded. The quality is not top of the line. (I find that to be true for most things in Israel.) The service is good. They will customize an order to your specifications, and they are willing to negotiate the price. I was happy with the bed and armoire, and subsequently purchased two sofas, a work station-cabinet assemblage, office chair and a customized bookcase.

Recommendation from Mick Jaron and Tonielle Reed: If you need a HANDYMAN call GABY. He just finished some electrical, mechanical and plumbing work for me. He is competent, thorough (goes the extra mile) and his prices are reasonable. And one thing that I found extraordinary is that Gaby cleans up after himself, something that I have not experienced since making Aliyah.
Gaby’s telephone number is 052-489-1127.

The A.L.M. / א ל מ store in the Regba Big Shopping Center is great for appliances. Mayer is a friendly, conscientious, salesperson with better than average English. I have purchased a refrigerator, washing machine, and radiator-type heater from him, and have been happy every time with the experience.

I highly recommend “Danny Manoolim” [Danny Locks]
If you’re looking for someone in Karmiel for locks, keys, immobilizers, or remote control devices, you’ll be doing yourself a favour if you go to “Danny Manoolim” in the old Kanyon (on the main floor).
I went to him last week because the remote to lock/unlock my car was playing up. He asked a few questions, and told me the problem was the car, not the remote (which was true).
Then yesterday I accidentally dropped the remote for my home heater (AC/heating) and it broke open. I managed to get it back–together more or less–but it wasn’t working, so I took it to Danny. He spent a few moments examining it, made a couple of adjustments, and then–it worked! He refused to take any money for that, and I went away very impressed and determined to recommend him to as many people as possible.

I have used this shop for a number of years. But in the last year or so things have changed. The owner seems to pay less attention to his quality of work and never checks the work performed by his employees.
I had the rear brakes on the my Ford Focus replaced about 6 months ago. I requested what are call Semi-Metallic brake shoes. These prevent squeaking when you apply the brakes. The first problem was his employee failed to install the brake properly and scored the new rotors. This happened within one hour of picking up the car. A retaining spring was installed incorrectly. When we showed him the work he said OK I will have it fixed right now, so we waited. After I drove the car for a couple of hours I noticed that the brake squeak became louder. I went right back and the mechanic said it was the cars fault and should stop very soon. Needless to say it did not. So my son and I pulled the rear wheel. The scored drum was not replaced and the brakes were not the type I requested.
When I complained he said next time I bring the car in he would make it all good.
So about a week later the upper water hose started leaking. So we took the car in and were told that things would be fixed to our satisfaction. It got worse from here. When they replaced the hose and the connection block between the engine and the hose they tightened the clamp on the heater hose so tight that it cracked an already faulty heater hose. This was really too much. When you are changing a water hose it is not a bad idea to check the other hoses. They failed to check requiring a additional repair a week later. At this point we noticed that the car started to run really rough. So since I have a history with cars and boats I decided it was time for my son and I to look into the engine problem and fix the hoses as they were supposed to be repaired in beginning.
After removing the air intake assembly (very simple) we found the rubber bumpers that are normally along the edge of the fender where the hood meets the fender when closed had been placed inside the air intake box and were now interrupting the air flow at the engine air intake. If any of these would have been sucked into the engine the intake valves would have been destroyed costing thousands to repair. This can only happen if the mechanic had intentionally place these large pieces of rubber into the intake box beyond where the Air Filter is located. These rubber bumpers are very common on Ford and many other cars.
When told of the owner about these problems the owner said nothing like this could have happened.
Needless to say we no longer do business with GAZ located in Shalot Industrial area next to Modiin.
Mark Lawson did a good job for us on our 2007 Aliyah. His price was reasonable, he was very helpful and accessible in answering our questions and the packer and loaders did an excellent job. The shipment arrived quickly without any significant damage. One piece of inexpensive glass was broken.
Most of all, Mark paid attention to what we said was important to us rather than just following his preset routine.
The customs agent here processed us promptly. The actual delivery staff were somewhat annoying, but did the job except for being lax in removing some of the packing materials.
